Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineering is a branch or basic area of civil engineering, which deals with water supply, disposal of waste water generated from domestic and industrial use and environmental pollution control.

Human activities are responsible for rapid degradation of our environment. Human activities in the form of, industries, vehicles etc. are responsible for generating huge solid, liquid and gaseous wastes which causes degradation of our environment. These wastes need to be treated, so that the environmental balance is maintained. Environmental engineering deals with resources, their pollution, pollution control, reuse of waste, design, construction, operation and maintenance of treatment plants etc.

Hence to maintain the ecological balance and to treat the waste Environmental Engineering is important.

Applications of Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineering deals with the study of water supply, sanitary engineering and environmental pollution such as air, water, noise, land and thermal pollution.

(a)Water Supply

- Natural water is treated by adding alum in sedimentation tanks where the fine turbid or earth particles are removed.
- After this treatment, it passes through sand filter and chlorine dose is added to kill the bacteria. In this way water is treated and made potable and then supplied by the network of pipes to the people.
- Thus the water supply and treatment of water supply comes under the part of environmental engineering.

(b)Sanitary Engineering

– It is a branch of environmental engineering which deals with the treatment and domestic and industrial wastewater.
- If waste remains around the domestic area, then various diseases will spread. - Therefore, wastewater in the big cities is carried away by network of pipelines called as sewers and treated further and is made harmless.

(c)Environmental Pollution

– It is also the part of environmental engineering which deals with the air pollution, sound pollution, thermal pollution and water pollution, etc.
- Due to ever increasing population all over the world, deforestation for more space on earth, industrialization and urbanization, lot of pollution problems such as air pollution, water pollution, land pollution and thermal pollution are created.

(d)Solid waste management

– Land population receives limited public attention, though it is significant effective. The collection, transport, processing and disposal of solid waste in proper manner is also handled by Environmental Engineering
